Reaching out finger and thumb he picked up a tiny, glinting something and stood. “Here.” He opened his hand, a bit of glass shining in his palm. “It’s from your shoe.”
“No.” I took a step back. “No, darling. My shoes are fine.”
His hand hung in the air as he watched me, a worried line between his brows. “Darling, your shoes are breaking. We can get you some new ones.”
I shook my head wordlessly.
In the shade of the hedges his eyes seemed a dark, smoky shade of green. He studied me, as if trying desperately to read my thoughts. I looked away, my cheeks burning. “They aren’t why I love you, you know,” he said at last.
“Of course not.” I forced myself to smile. “But they…they brought you to me.” My voice was too high.
“But they’ll cut you, darling.” The piece of glass winked in his hand. “What happens when they fall to pieces under your feet?”
My smile was so brittle I thought it would break. “I wished for them.” I tried to make my voice light, as if it were a small matter. “They could never hurt me.”
Have you ever wondered what comes after the happy ever after? My Cinderella continuation Glass and Feathers asks what happens if the princess in the glass slippers finds that her famous shoes no longer fit.
